Road protest group disrupts awards event

ROAD protesters gate-crashed an awards event and handed out leaflets challenging the Priory Crescent road widening scheme.

Members of Parklife entered the meeting at Prittlewell Priory, Southend on Tuesday.

It was held to commend Southend Council's archaeologists, who unearthed the Prince of Prittlewell in 2003.

John Smith, a spokesman for the Priory Park campaign group, said the scale of the protest showed there was still widespread opposition to the £20m road scheme.

The council's chief executive for culture, sport and amenity, Councillor Ann Holland said she supported the campaigners' right to protest but added: "If it wasn't for the road scheme we would have never unearthed these wonderful treasures."
