Priory Crescent battle hots up

PROTESTERS against the £21million Priory Crescent development in Southend were today preparing for a battle in case the Government agrees to fund the scheme.

The Regional Framework Group sub-group, of the East of England Regional Assembly, endorsed the plans to widen the road to a dual carriageway and believe the Government will have made a decision by late spring. But campaigners, who oppose the plans because the work will take place right next to the burial site of the Saxon King, say the process has been "undemocratic".

Campaigner Shaun Qureshi said: "We are protecting this site for the people of Southend.

"Our only hope now is for the Government to reject the funding or for us to suggest direct action - something we're preparing for."
